The lack of diversity in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been one of the biggest issues comicbook fans have complained about for the past few years. The studio had only focused on giving the spotlight to white male characters and denying female leads.
However, it does seem like Marvel is adding more diversity to the MCU, as Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn suggests that Marvel fans might have a big LGBTQ character without even knowing it.
Speaking with The Guardian, Gunn talks about how he believes that gay characters could already be present in the MCU they just haven’t been revealed yet.
“You know, somebody asked me, ‘Will there be any gay characters in Marvel movies?’ and what I meant was there’s a lot of characters in the MCU and very few of them that we’ve delved into what their sexuality is. Whether it’s guy or straight or bisexual, we don’t really know. Um, so I imagine that there are probably, you know, gay characters in the Marvel universe, you know, we just don’t know who they are yet.”
Last month Gunn also teased the possibility of a LGBTQ protagonist in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 premieres on May 5, 2017.
