Doom References 1996 Comic Book Meme

Doom was more than a game. The series had movie deals, action figures and even comic books. A line from the comics can be seen in the new doom game.

The new Doom opens with an ominous demonic symbol and voice over:

“They are rage, brutal, without mercy. But you. You will be worse. Rip and tear, until it is done.”

The first level of the game also sets the tone for how violent the game will be as the level is rightly called Rip & Tear. The title of the level appears as part of a meme from the comic series released in 1996.

In the comics the term “Rip and Tear” was used when Doom Marine Flynn “Fly” Taggart, would use a berserker item to help him slay demons by ripping the enemies apart with his fists.

This is what Doomworld has to say on the comic:

“One of my most favorite parts in the comic is when the marine inadvertently falls into some radioactive sludge and suddenly, in the middle of a massive killing spree, starts to preach about how humans are ruining the environment and how we’ll be leaving a destroyed planet to our children and our children’s children. The whole panel is such a random segment from the rest of the comic, which provides wholesome family fun (in the form of killing shit) and then goes off on a tangential environmental crusade, albeit a pretty half-assed one.”

You can read the comic itself at Doomworld.
